  3.     TIME does not capitalize the name of the planet earth, and
  4. some readers are curious about the reason, since we do
  5. capitalize Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto and so on. The
  6. explanation: following grammatical rules for capitalizing proper
  7. names, we uppercase those celestial bodies named after
  8. mythological gods. Inasmuch as the earth, the moon and the sun
  9. have no mythical forebears, they remain lowercase.
